 | Mark Prisk MP questions cost to Cornwall of new Lib Dem tax plans |
 |
MARK PRISK MP, the Shadow Minister for Cornwall, has questioned what the overall cost would be to Cornwall of the Lib Dems new tax plans on expensive properties.
An advisor to Lib Dems economic spokesman Vince Cable MP stated in the Municipal Journal that “the idea is that if, say, Cornwall CC raised £30m through the new tax, we would reduce the authority’s central government grant by £30m”.
Commenting on these proposals, Mark said: “Why should big government in Whitehall decide how this additional tax on homes in Cornwall, raised by Cornwall Council, is spent? The Conservatives are committed bringing more power to a local level through local councils allowing the people of Cornwall to have a more active say in their county.
“Also, it has been 18 years since the last property valuation was carried out for Council tax in Cornwall. I want to ensure that the cost of any revaluation and the inevitable appeals on valuations does not become a burden on the people of Cornwall.
“It seems to be very unfair to me to ask the tax payers of Cornwall, many who are having great difficulty in this time of recession, to pay for what could prove to be a very expensive administrative exercise.”
